With the remake of The Wicker Man coming out next week, I have been trying to put my finger on why this remake upsets me so much. I do know why I love the original - it is quirky, silly and yet still manages to make you really uncomfortable. There are no crazy special effects, foreboding music or monsters to manipulate your fear - you are in a completely realistic situation and the characters are all logical (as logical as any group with strong religious beliefs).

Neil LaBute's version of the film goes a different route - from the trailer it seems that the film is a complete turn from the original minus some plot points - Neil LaBute has said he was aware of that, but his goal was to achieve the same effect that the original had, but with different means -

It remains to be seen whether his effort will be successful - but I do know that while gimmickry may work in the moment; it will not have the lasting impact of well crafted ambience.
